Mountaineering in the Austrian Alps

Sunshine and crevasses! What more could you want? OK, a little less of the latter!

During three days rigorous training with the guides (including a few schnapps) the group practised crevasse rescue and then short roping on the Mittlere Guslarspitze (3128m) before heading off independently. Having successfully negotiated the glaciers up to the Guslarjoch (3361 m) and on to the Fluchtkogel summit (3497m) there followed a night in the atmospheric Brandenburger Haus (3277m). Seizing the opportunity to practice negotiating heavily crevassed terrain the group then descended to the Hochjoch Hospiz before returning to the valley with a final ascent up to the Schwarzkogel (3016m) followed by a celebratory beer and pizza.
